100% natural, biodegradable, and durable. These are three characteristics of hemp fabric that make it extremely versatile and suitable for numerous applications. As we have seen in the history of hemp, it is a fiber long underestimated but widely used in the textile and packaging industries. It is ideal for packaging natural solid soaps, for example, as well as for containing and protecting clothing and footwear.

How to wash hemp fabric bags

Hemp fabric is usually quite stiff and durable, both to the touch and in maintenance, similar to linen. However, special care must be taken during washing to avoid damaging the fiber and, following some simple tips, it is even possible to make the fabric softer and more pleasant to the touch over time.

Hemp can be washed either by hand or in a washing machine, while dry cleaning is discouraged as it will shrink the fabric and may even damage it.

    Hand washing hemp

The method that ensures the best results, as with cotton, is hand washing. It is important to use natural and gentle detergents, preferably plant-based, which respect and protect the fibers. This is even more important if the hemp fabric is naturally dyed: a harsh detergent could fade the color and damage the fabric.

After washing, the bag must be rinsed thoroughly using clean water. Detergents can leave cellulose residues on the fabric that cause brown stains, which can irreparably damage it!

Washing hemp in the washing machine

Sometimes there is not enough time to hand wash hemp fabrics, clothing, and bags, but the washing machine can be safely used if certain precautions are taken. The recommendation is to use the delicate cycle and, again, a natural detergent that protects the fibers. If the hemp item is particularly fragile, placing it inside a laundry bag before washing is advisable.

    Drying and ironing hemp

Whether hand washed or machine washed, hemp should be dried gently. Ideally, it should be dried outdoors, avoiding direct sunlight which fades colors and stiffens fibers. If using a dryer, set it to a low temperature, as you would for delicate garments, and remove the fabric before it is fully dry.

Despite hemp being a durable fabric, the natural quality of the fiber requires careful handling like that of a delicate product to ensure long-lasting preservation. Proper washing and drying also allow you to soften the texture. Wrinkles and creases can be removed with a hot iron: for best results, it is better to iron the fabric while still damp, and if the fabric is dyed or printed (with the screen printing technique or hot foil stamping), iron on the reverse side.

Common mistakes to avoid when handling hemp

Proper maintenance of hemp fabrics also requires awareness of some common mistakes to avoid. Some have already been highlighted, such as never dry cleaning these items, and others will now be addressed.

Anything that can damage a delicate and natural fabric must be avoided with hemp. Therefore, avoid excessive spinning in the washing machine, do not leave it too long in the sun, and do not wash at high temperatures. We have seen that rinsing is essential to prevent staining, and detergents should always be natural. Even in case of stains or persistent dirt, avoid bleach and instead use a natural solid soap, apply it directly to the area, then wash and air dry.

We conclude with the classic “grandmother's tip.” For clean, disinfected, and soft hemp fabric, try adding approximately 250 ml of white vinegar during the rinse phase: it will make the fibers even cleaner and softer!
