Could you recognize the difference between a bag with a drawstring closure and one with a candy wrap closure? These are two types of closures often mentioned, especially in the field of fabric packaging for cosmetic or jewelry boxes, but which non-experts can easily confuse.

In fact, when we talk about a “bag with a zip closure,” everyone can immediately picture the metal tab sliding between the teeth for opening and closing, but when it comes to drawstrings, the matter changes. Many do not know what it is and confuse this type of closure with the candy wrap.

In this article, we will look together at how drawstring and candy wrap closures are made and how they differ.

    What is a drawstring closure

The term drawstring derives from French, specifically from the terms coulis, an adjective meaning “sliding”, and couler, which means “to flow, to slide”. The term can be translated as “guide,” “slot,” or “groove”.

According to the Treccani definition, the drawstring is: “In tailoring, a passage created in a garment by means of a double parallel stitching, through which a cord is run; its two ends are then pulled and tied to make the garment fit the waist or, in any case, to tighten the circumference by gathering the fabric.”
It also refers to drawstring closure as a “guide that allows the movement of a mechanism”. The Repubblica dictionary defines it as “A particular type of belt consisting of a ribbon or lace passing through fabric stitched in a tubular shape”: indeed, the drawstring closure is made by overlapping two fabric layers fixed by two parallel stitches, through which the cord must be able to slide and be tied to close the bag.

In fabric packaging, bags with drawstring closures are in high demand because this technique makes opening and closing the packaging very easy and gives the bag a very distinctive and elegant appearance, particularly when made of fabrics like satin or velvet.

The drawstring closure can be made with one cord – for example, this velvet bag for perfumes and electronic cigarette aromas – or with two cords, as in the case of this natural cotton bag.

Besides fabric packaging, drawstrings are also used in clothing: for example, the cord of a sweatshirt hood runs inside a drawstring, which is a fabric flap folded over itself and secured by a stitch running parallel to the fold.

What a candy wrap closure looks like

The candy wrap closure is named as such precisely because the bag takes the shape of a candy wrapper, ideal for creating charming and practical packaging.

In reality, it is very similar to the drawstring closure: there are cords – which can be made of different fabrics, such as twine, satin, or cotton – that run inside a gap. By pulling the two cords outward, the two opposite fabric flaps join, and the part of the fabric above the gathering created by the cords takes the shape of a candy wrapper, as in this case of a natural cotton bag for costume jewelry.

What distinguishes this closure from the drawstring is precisely the gathered piece of fabric that remains above the cord and prevents the bag's contents from spilling out.

Drawstring and candy wrap closures can be considered accessories and decorative elements of the bag and, as such, you may prefer one or the other to enhance your fabric bags and give them a more personal touch.
