More than two years have passed since the arrival of the Coronavirus caused the cancellation and postponement of many events, including packaging and food industry fairs. The waiting period seems to be coming to an end: in fact, already since this summer, several trade fair organizations have resumed preparations to hold fairs both online and in person.
From Cibus to Milan Fashion Week, from Sana to Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna, only fairs for the food packaging sector were still missing.
Here are the upcoming appointments for 2022.
The most important packaging and food industry fairs you could attend in 2022
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, almost all trade fair organizations had to completely reorganize their schedules—and the formats: online or in person—but finally, we have the dates for the next food packaging fairs in 2022. Here are the most important ones:
- IPACK-IMA, new edition, from May 3 to 6, 2022. After the 2021 edition held alongside Meat-Tech, this fair will have a new edition in 2022, in Milan. It is one of the most important international fairs for the packaging sector (food and non-food), processing, and internal logistics. The event represents a meeting platform between technology suppliers and user companies.
- IFFA - International trade fair for the meat industry will take place from May 14 to 19, 2022. Hosted in Frankfurt, the event is dedicated not only to food packaging but also to other consumer goods, meat, and food processing.
- Cibus Tec, the new edition of the biennial fair in Parma, will be held from October 25 to 28, 2022. It is dedicated to technologies for production, packaging, and logistics in the food industry.
Your Brand’s image is also conveyed through packaging
Packaging is a very powerful communication tool for companies, capable of attracting new customers, conveying a precise message, and even telling the story of the brand.
When the packaging sector meets the food sector, the discussion becomes more complex. First of all, due to the type of products it must contain, packaging must be safe and of high quality, maintaining these characteristics over time. Added to this is the growing importance given to the environmental impact of such packaging: production processes, sourcing of raw materials, and disposal acquire a fundamental role in respecting the environment.
This is why packaging is so important: quality, transparency, and sustainability are the principles to follow when choosing the right packaging, which must meet the product’s characteristics and, at the same time, comply with the regulations governing food packaging.
Food packaging: which solutions to choose?
Finding the right packaging for your food products is not easy. As mentioned, the packaging is a marketing tool but, above all, it must be safe for the food it will contain and must not be potentially harmful to the health of customers (and also of the Planet!).
So how do you choose the right packaging? Just follow some guidelines.
1. Compliance with regulations
Materials and objects intended to come into contact with food must comply with certain regulations:
- The general European regulation to refer to is EC No. 1935/2004, which guarantees food safety and traceability at the community level.
- MOCA is the regulation concerning all materials and objects that come into contact with food. It includes various rules differentiated by material to protect consumer health.
- The Directive (EU) 2019/904 — or Single Use Plastic (SUP) Directive — is an EU regulatory intervention aimed at regulating the use of single-use plastics.
- The Ministry of Health Decree (DM 21.03.1973 and subsequent amendments) applies to glass, cellulosic materials, stainless steel, tin and chrome bands, ceramics, aluminum, and rubber.
2. Materials, shapes, and colors adapted to the product and target market
Packaging must be customised to reflect your brand and be recognizable by your customers. Therefore, besides the content, colors, shapes, graphics, and materials of the packaging must ensure your product is immediately identifiable.
3. Choose the message you want to convey
We already said that packaging can help you communicate a message and give you the opportunity to leverage current trends. For example, you can use eco-friendly materials to communicate your company’s commitment to environmental protection.
Bioplastics, palm leaves, hemp, cellulose pulp, recycled paper, natural and certified fabrics: there are many materials to choose from. These materials enable you to offer a high-quality, safe, and sustainable packaging capable of perfectly preserving food products while complying with all sector regulations.
When it is not possible to completely avoid plastic packaging, it is essential to understand its life cycle and inform your customers about packaging disposal methods.
Fabric bags for safe, ecological, and impressive food packaging
If you want to attend a trade fair and need the right package, fabric bags can be a winning choice.
You can find various types of bags in many alternative and sustainable materials, fully customisable in colors, shape, and graphics to best reflect your brand: hemp, jute, velvet, cotton… you have a wide range of options among many certified and safe fabrics to enclose and enhance your products!
For example, if you are looking for an eye-catching package for cured meats, cheeses, and sausages, a cotton and jute bag is the ideal choice: these are two resistant and breathable fabrics that will keep your products safe. For baked goods, jute or cotton bags are also among the most suitable because they are natural, 100% biodegradable, and highly breathable.
Looking for something more refined? With velvet or satin you can create elegant and luxurious packaging for wines and oils, or for preserves, sausages, and gastronomic products of Italian tradition.
To contain and preserve nuts and legumes, you can also choose among many types of hemp and jute bags, while a natural twill cotton bag could make lovely packages for coffee and preserves to display at your fair stand.
