Summer has arrived and many people are preparing to leave for their holidays. Leaving also means having to pack your suitcase, and for some this task can be quite challenging. There are so many things to take and so little space to store them that choosing which clothes to leave behind becomes a real challenge. How do you decide what to bring and what not to? If minimalism is not your strength, there are some space-saving tricks that will allow you to avoid compromises and have everything you need with you.
Here are 5 space-saving ideas that can help you decide what to pack in your suitcase and how to prepare it with less difficulty.
1. Check the weather forecast
Before leaving, take a look at the weather forecast for the location where you will be staying. If you already know what temperatures to expect, you can better organise your choice of clothes and accessories to pack, avoiding bringing everything “just in case.” For example, if the forecast predicts warm weather throughout, you can avoid packing too many clothes and jackets that take up unnecessary space in your suitcase. Perhaps bring just one jacket or a sweatshirt as a precaution. Conversely, if cold days are expected, you can skip packing very light clothes that you won’t be able to wear.
2. Select matching outfits
Before you start packing, select the most appropriate pieces, not only based on the weather forecast but also according to possible combinations. Bringing tops and pants that do not match each other is pointless; think of a specific outfit to wear each day so that you know exactly what to pack. If you want a bit of variety, bring a few additional pieces that can mix with the outfits you initially planned, but don’t overdo it!

3. Never fill the suitcase completely
It’s better to always leave a little space in your suitcase; once you are travelling, you might buy some souvenirs for yourself or your loved ones and then not have enough space to put them. Even when you think your suitcase is full, try to take advantage of small gaps that can form—for example, the corners, which often remain empty—or you can place small items and socks inside your shoes. This way you gain extra space.
4. Sort by category and use fabric bags
Divide everything you need to bring into categories and put them in fabric bags; this will make your suitcase more organised and it will be easier to unpack everything once you arrive at your destination.
Fabric bags are excellent because they can hold all kinds of items; for example, you can use:
- Microfiber bags that, besides keeping shoes organised, prevent clothes from getting dirty from contact with worn soles.
- Canvas pouches to use instead of beauty cases, which are usually rigid and bulky, and can be comfortably stored in any corner of the suitcase without taking up too much space.
- Shirt covers to keep shirts safe and prevent them from wrinkling.
- For smokers, there are specific velvet bags for electronic cigarettes, where you can store the e-cigarette and accessories needed to use it.
Obviously, fabric bags come in all styles and a wide range of stylistic concepts, from the velvet bag for those who want a classic style, to bags made from natural fabrics and bags in linen or jute fabric for those who prefer a more vintage style.
5. Hand luggage
The challenge becomes even greater if you have to travel by plane and use hand luggage. Here too, there are tricks you can use to gain some space:
- Roll your clothes so they take up less space
- Check what is provided at the hotel where you will be staying: are towels, beach towels, and shower gel already available? If so, it’s unnecessary to bring them with you.
These small details will help you pack your suitcase methodically and neatly, enabling you to include more items and clothes than you thought you could carry. Now all that’s left is to leave and enjoy your holidays!
